Cognac

To come to Cognac is to discover the secrets of the most famous brandy in the world - through its Great Cognac Houses or museum (the Musée des Arts du Cognac). From ancient times to the early 20th century Cognac used its excellent location on the banks of the river Charente to export its produce throughout Europe: salt, wine, brandy. All of these good were loaded onto heavy "gabarres" (traditional, flat-bottomed boats), transported to the mouth of the river and transferred to ocean-going vessels for their onward journey to far-flung destinations. Today "gabarres" no longer transport goods but are used for passenger cruises.
