    The poitevin Marsh

    All of the poitevin Marsh extends on approximately 100,000 acres in three departments: Vendée, Deux-Sèvres and Charente-Maritime. The poitevin Marsh is made up of several large entities ecological and landscape related to hydraulic operation. Spread over 15,000 hectares, the wet Marsh is a maze of channels (4000 km) tinged with shades of green. Dried Marsh, s Bay l sting to Marans on the departments of Charente-Maritime and Vendée, and offers a landscape grid straight channel separating d vast prairies.

    Charron and its surroundings

    Charron is a village of 'sea farmers', its activities depending on the tides. An outstanding location, enjoying a combination of fresh and salt water, and its many hours of sunshine make it the realm of mussel-farming. Cultivated mussels are its most famous product, bearing the trademark: "La Charron". This little village stands on the Baie de l'Aiguillon, linking the Marais Poitevin to the sea, an area which extends into the Charente Maritime and Vendée departments, a paradise for birds and cultivated mussels.

    Very close to the Marais Poitevin and not far from La Rochelle, Surgères boasts a truly outstanding historical and architectural heritage and enjoys a solid reputation in the dairy industry. The Romanesque church of Notre Dame de Surgères, with its unusual octagonal bell-tower, stands within the medieval walls of the town centre. This religious building is one of the loveliest in Aunis and Saintonge, with its richly carved façade and mysterious crypt with frescoes. A short distance away, along the old wall, can be seen the remains of the towers and gates of the old prisons. This architectural ensemble is surrounded by a lovely park - perfect for a gentle stroll and an excellent spot for that family picnic.

    The Aunis area retains many buildings which bear witness to the Romanesque movement which flourished in the 12th century. Although many churches were damaged in the Wars of Religion, a few jewels of Romanesque art survived: the church of Notre-Dame de Surgères, the elaborate façades of the churches at Vandré, Vouhé, Forges d'Aunis, Bouhet, the murals in the churches at St Mard, the church at Puyrolland - are all well worth a visit.
